There
is a parable about a farmer planting seed. The seed falls on different
types of dirt. Any of you that have planted a garden know more about dirt
than I do. In this story some of the seeds fall on dirt that is a walking
path, hard, tamped down, barren. Some of the seed falls on dirt that is
very shallow. Like the dirt at my house, four inches of soil on top of
16 feet of shale. Some of the seed falls on dirt that is infested with
weeds and thorn bushes. Some of the seed falls on dirt that is good, rich
soil, able to accept the seed. You may already recognize this parable
as The Sower and the Seed, told by Jesus. There are a number of interesting
things about this parable; like what does the seed represent, who does
the farmer represent, what does the Sun, thorns, and birds represent.
But the interesting thing I find is that the dirt represents people. More
accurately, the condition of a person's "heart." So as you think about
these different types of dirt in this story ask yourself, what type of
dirt represents me? Am I like the path, hard and impenetrable? Unable
to have God's message enter my heart. Or, am I like the shallow rocky
soil? Having my interest peaked by God's message but never really taking
it seriously and allowing it to grow deep in my heart. Perhaps I'm like
the seed that grew among thorns and weeds. I find God's message acceptable
and true butt the things of life are more important to me and are my priority.
God's message eventually gets choked out. I hope that you are like the
good soil. You have a heart that accepts God's message and allows it to
become the first priority in your life. It gives you a new worldview and
has changed you from the inside-out with the TRUTH. Read it for yourself
