High Tides and Low Tides

Good lessons for bad times

Last week my wife, Barb, and I had some nice mornings where we went kayaking on the bay between Chincoteague and Asoteague Islands. When it's high tide you can go all over the bay and in various inlets and creeks without concern over hitting the bottom. Not so when the tide is low. It's a different bay; more land and oyster beds exposed. Some inlets are not even paddleable. At low tide there is more wildlife action. Many more creatures are out feeding and devouring each other. High Tide and Low Tide make a difference on life in the bay. Years ago I spoke with a man that thought of high and low tides as the times of blessing in our lives and the times of trouble. High tides are like the times we feel God close to us, maybe things are going great; you feel on top of things, the tide is high. Eventually the tide goes out and it's low tide in your life. Like the low tide in the bay, things are exposed that you don't see during high tide. These low times in our life reveal areas in our life that we did not see during the high tides in our life. During these low tides we have the opportunity to put into practice the things that we learned during the high tides of life. The high tides are not just for us to enjoy smooth waters, they are to teach us things we need to know and remember during the low tides of life.

Psalms 77:11-12 I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds

2 Timothy 2:8-10 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
